How to Insert a JPG (or Picture) File Into a Word Document

The instructions provided below will help you to insert a jpg file (that is, a picture file, which can be either a clipart image or a personal photo) into a Word document, and make some simple changes to it.

1. Open a Word document, and click on Insert on your toolbar. Next, click on Picture.

2. To insert clipart that is included in Microsoft Word, click on Clipart. A "sidebar" will open up on the right side of your screen. In the "Search for" field type a word that describes what you are looking for, such as "pumpkin" (or any one or two words to describe what kind of clipart image you want to find). When images begin to appear below, scroll down until you find an image that you like. Click on that image. It will appear in your Word document (wherever the cursor is in the document).

3. To insert a personal photo, click on From File.Locate the picture that you want to insert. (You locate the file just as you would for any other file that you are looking for, but clicking on the arrow in the “Look for” field, and clicking on the place or folder that has the photos, such as the folder named My Pictures). When you find the photo you want to insert, click on that photo, and then click Insert at the bottom of the pop-up window.

4. If you need to make the picture (clipart or photo) fit the page better, then switch to Print Layout view. You can do that by either clicking on View on the toolbar, and then clicking on Print Layout, or you can click on the print layout view icon at the bottom left corner of your screen. It is the third button from the left.

5. Once you have switched to Print Layout view, you can “see” the size of the paper, and the edges of the picture. Click on the picture. Now move the cursor to the bottom edge of the picture, right in the middle. The cursor will change to an up and down arrow. Hold down the mouse bottom and drag the mouse. You can make the picture bigger or smaller.

You have now inserted a jpg file (clipart or photo) into a Word document!
